The video Digging into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch gave me insight into the how detrimental "disposable" products are to the environment. It was concerning to learn that every plastic molecule ever made is still present somewhere on earth.
After a quick google search, I learned there are a number of products that follow the green chemistry principles. For instance, there are medicine making procedures that are now using green chemistry methods that eliminate the need to metal catalysts. In addition, companies are not making biodegradable plastics. After learning about the benefits of green chemistry products, I will make it a point to be more conscientious about buying green chemistry products.
You make a great point. As seen in the video, plastic is everywhere, is almost indestructible, and it never goes away. It is terrifying that tons of plastic are collecting in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in the Great Pacific garbage patch. We should do something to remedy this situation. I believe we have hope with green chemistry as it promotes safer products for humans and the environment. I’m glad to hear that you have taken a first step about buying green chemistry products.
ReplyDeleteI have always wondered, where all the plastic ends up at. The video Digging into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch was an eye opener. It's hard to believe that many of our trash ends up thousands of miles away, across oceans. We need to move towards green chemistry. We have learn so much about the harm we are creating in our environment, and plastic just create even more harm. We need to find ways to reduce our carbon footprint, and I believe the green chemistry leads us towards that path.
